QB Shea Patterson urges Michigan's critics to 'relax a little bit'

Shea Patterson's first game at Michigan didn't go as planned. The Wolverines came out flat and the starting quarterback turned the ball over twice.

But Michigan also had a chance to tie the game late before losing, 24-17, at Notre Dame.

That result -- and its 49-3 bounce-back win over Western Michigan -- has Patterson cautioning overzealous fans already writingA Michigan's death notice.

"I think people just need to relax a little bit," Patterson told WXYT-FM (97.1) in Detroit. "It was our first game and we lost by a touchdown, at Notre Dame and against a very good team.A

"Especially with it being the first game of the season."

Patterson was 20 of 30 for 227 yards and an interception in his debut, one that saw MichiganA give up a pair of touchdowns early and fall behind 21-3. Things improved from there, with the defense allowing just three points and 69 yards of total offense in the second half, though the offense took three-plus quarters to find the end zone.

Michigan (1-1) responded last Saturday with 21 first-quarter points against WMU, an overmatched and inferior opponent. The Wolverines took a 35-0 lead into halftime before totaling 451 yards of offense, 308 of which came on the ground.

"You do one of two things after a tough loss like that: you can think about it for the whole week and let it carry over to the next game, or put it behind you and get better," Patterson said.
